SMILE Technique Implants

What Are SMILE* Technique Implants?

Simplified Microsurgical Implant Lifelike Esthetics

SMILE Technique Implants have set a new standard for aesthetic dental implant treatment. Developed by Dr. Shanelec, this innovative procedure is widely acclaimed throughout the profession as the dental implant technique that produces the most lifelike, natural looking results in implant dentistry today.

This highly specialized technique addresses two of the most critical factors impacting the final aesthetics of a dental implant restoration: the bone that begins to melt away and the gum tissue that collapses into the socket when a tooth is removed. The SMILE Technique employs minimally invasive extraction, immediate implant placement, and a temporary crown to preserve your natural smile.

The microscope is utilized to surgically remove the tooth. A dental implant is immediately placed, in the precise position and angle for a crown to emerge from the gum exactly like a natural tooth. Immediate placement of the dental implant will prevent bone loss from disfiguring the natural smile. Attaching a custom temporary crown supports the gum to maintain tissue height and appearance for lifelike, natural results.

The SMILE Technique allows patients to leave our office following their appointment with a comfortable and aesthetic temporary replacement tooth. This is not possible with other methods of implant treatment that involve multiple surgeries and removable temporary teeth. The SMILE Technique is a single-visit, one-step treatment that requires minimal healing time.

Success Rates

In every surgical field of dentistry and medicine, the rate of success is directly related to the number and frequency of procedures a surgeon performs. High success is not likely when a dentist does only occasional surgery. It is simply not possible to develop and maintain skills and experience when implant surgery is not done on a regular basis. Dr. Shanelec limits his practice to dental implants and aesthetic microsurgery. He performs minimally invasive dental implant microsurgery on a daily basis, placing over 400 dental implants each year.

Dr. Shanelec has more peer-reviewed and published results on SMILE technique implants than any surgeon worldwide. We are proud of our record of success and constantly evaluate and improve dental implant microsurgery techniques and instruments to further improve our procedures.

Worldwide, the success rate of dental implants is about 96%. Our success rate with SMILE technique implants is higher than that figure. For example, over a 12-year period, Dr. Shanelec placed 441 SMILE implants to replace upper front teeth. Only two implants did not properly integrate.  These were successfully replaced at no charge to the patients. Our current success rate for SMILE Technique implants is over 98%. These results have been published in the California Dental Association Journal and the Clinical Journal of the American Academy of Periodontology.
